exherbo amd64 grub cannot compile

i got error start _start for grub 1.96

https://savannah.gnu.org/bugs/?25584

svn version should work. I will try now 1.97~beta2, but I don’t know how to create exheres to handle such version name with tilda.

so i have modified exheres a little to compile 1.97~beta2 as 1.97, including modifying tar.gz: change dir name, remove man1 and man8 dir creation

http://www.drlock.com/blog/2008/07/11/tweaking-grub-2/

i have error during grub-install:
grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for /dev/sda

backup mbr

dd if=InputFile of=OutputFile

dd of=/dev/sda if=mbr.img bs=512 count=1
that my dear friend will leave you with a hard drive ONLY with your MBR and absolutely NOTHING else.

The correct one is the following:
dd if=mbr.img of=/dev/sda bs=512 count=1 conv=notrunc

UPDATE:

Sorry, the original author is right. Not only is it sound theoretically, but I tested it before posting here…

I just messed around with my partition table (going to reinstall anyway), then used his command to restore my 512 byte MBR backup, excluding your suggested option. My partitions were all intact, both OSes I had on the drive booted fine, etc.

How To Do Eveything With DD

a href=”http://identi.ca/conversation/58578742#notice-59143178″>http://identi.ca/conversation/58578742#notice-5914317

MBR is 512 bytes long: 446 bytes is bootloader (ie. grub stage1), 2 bytes are constant, 64 bytes are for partition table

So it’s even better to backup only 446 bytes
